pOur guest for this week's Göteborg Spotlight feature: bLisen Rylander/b of a href="http://www.myspace.com/midaircondo" target="_blank"bMidaircondo/b/a and a href="http://www.myspace.com/thesplendorthesplendor" target="_blank"bThe Splendor/b/a. On to the questions!/p pbHow long have you lived in Göteborg? What brought you there and what keeps you hanging around?/b/p pI've lived here for all my life except for two years in Skurup studying improvisation, and two and a half years in Stockholm. I really enjoy living here now, I think it's a good music climate and I play with many good musicians. Of course I'm sometimes thinking of moving to another city for a while when I think Göteborg is too small. For example New York would be nice, but not right now. Actually, I often like the small size of Göteborg, you always meet someone you know on the street and it's easy to get everywhere./p pI'm touring internationally a lot and Göteborg is a nice city to have as a base./p pbDo you think there's a particular Gbg sound or attitude? If so, how would you describe it?/b/p pYes, maybe... I think there's a very relaxed music atmosphere here, not so much competition between musicians. Since media in Sweden are very focused on what's going on in Stockholm, musicians here have kind of the same situation in fighting for attention. Most Gbg musicians I've met are also very musically open minded. Göteborg is kind of an industrial city, rough in a way, and that sometimes shows in the music. A lot of interesting bands and artists are coming from here. For example, an artist like bHåkan Hellström/b could probably not come from another city than Göteborg.../p pbHow does the city inspire you? Is it the people? The geography? Weather? Other artists?/b/p pI'm inspired by the way many Gbg musicians are open minded and do their own thing irrespectively of what other people think./p pbOne thing I appreciate about the Gbg scene is that it seems to foster a collaborative attitude - do you find this to be true as well? How do you think it compares with the scene in Stockholm and/or other Swedish cities (or elsewhere)?/b/p pI agree that there's a collaborative attitude among musicians in Gbg but I can't really compare to other cities... Maybe this attitude comes from that the city is quite small and everyone knows one another. Also, musicians here often mix genres. But on the other hand, I think this is quite common everywhere these days./p pbIn a href="http://www.itsatrap.com/mp3.php?t=693"my interviews with Petter Ottosson of Fang Bomb/a I bemoaned the lack of a female presence in the experimental music world. Would you agree that this is the case? What do you think can be done to change the situation?/b/p pYes, I agree that there's too few female artists in experimental music but I think it's about to change. For younger female musicians to have role models in experimental music, it's important that the one's working in the field today are encouraged and exposed./p pbLastly, do you have a song you'd like to share with our readers?/b/p pSure! Here is i"Canary Islands"/i with bThe Splendor/b. It's a track from the new cd i"Sound of Splendor"/i, released in April./p

  27. New Islands - "Creeper"

pDiamonds are forever, although maybe not as stage names go. But if you haven't seen Islands since Nick went back to given name Thorburn -- and if you somehow missed our dispatches from Austin and their a href="http://stereogum.com/archives/concert/sxsw-saturday-in-photos_008472.html"effus ive Islandeering/a -- the nominal shift is having no effect on the stage itself. (I.e. a href="http://stereogum.com/archives/video/sxsw-islands-are-awesome_008448.html"Island s are awesome/a.) If anything, the band's an even more fascinating live act now, which, to those familiar with the group's white-clad, multi-membered assault, is saying a lot. It could be a little bit in the switch to all-black attire, and the accompanying Nick-inwhite-face. Or it just could be that everything with you loved from the ex-Unicorner's emReturn To The Sea/em is expanded and supplanted by the bolder, occasionally darker, definitely crunchier follow-up emArm's Way/em. We heard "a href="http://stereogum.com/b-sides/new-islands-the-arm-007918.html"The Arm/a" a few weeks ago, which showed the lighter side of things; "Creeper" makes good on the darker (stabbings and knives! hiding in dark rooms!) side of things, the guitar chug and crunch, the colder beats. This is music for midnight, not those Islands tropical sunsets, and that makes it a very good time. All that, plus a a href="http://stereogum.com/archives/video/stereogums-texas-music-trivia-round-1_00849 8.html"superb knowledge of Texas/a. /pp[emPhotos from SXSW '08/em]/pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=7nsJ0pG"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=7nsJ0pG" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=4rHinbg"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=4rHinbg" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=jqHVUmg"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=jqHVUmg" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?a=9gQCZsG"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/stereogum/cBYa?i=9gQCZsG" border="0"/img/a /div

pHere#8217;s a new instrumental track for your background listening pleasure, a href="http://www.redstatesoundsystem.com/audio/red_state_soundsystem-terminal_island. mp3"#8220;Terminal Island#8221;/a. It#8217;s kind of me trying to do Trentemoller/Burial sort of ambient stuff. The melody lines are algorithmically generated and then looped./p pIt#8217;s a nice little atmospheric piece, named after the island in Long Beach Harbor near where I used to live./p pI have dozens of these little pieces on my hard drive, ideas for pop tracks that never went anywhere or just experimentations. Every so often, I just pull one out and shape it roughly into a song. I think of these pieces as sort of the musical equivalent of deleted scenes on a DVD, or b-sides. They#8217;re fun to put together and they sound nice, but they#8217;re not really full-fledged songs in their own right #8212; more musical textures, like motifs from a soundtrack. At some point, I#8217;ll probably put out a collection of them #8212; my own iSelected Ambient Works/i, I suppose./p
